本书是与《新编大学英语》第二册相配套的课文辅导，共有12个单元，每个单元包括七个部分：1、课文背景与概述；2、词汇及短语；3、句子；4、课文练习答案及详解（包括客观题的准确答案和主观题的参考答案）；5、参考译文（包括课文与课后阅读材料两部分的译文）；6、四级考试相关模拟题及详解；7、工具箱。

《当代英美散文名篇选读（上册）》以非文学类作品为主，注重选文的风格和体裁的多样性，入选作品的作者均为20世纪名家。《当代英美散文名篇选读（上册）》语言活泼，时代气息浓厚，内容丰富。上、下册各有10篇散文，包括叙事、描写、说明、演讲、类比、辩论、书评等类型，内容涉及广泛，诸如社会、政治、婚姻、家庭、语言、文学等。
