从20世纪60—70年代起，在女权主义运动和新史学的推动下，西方妇女史研究异军突起，蓬勃发展。在我国，随着改革开放后中外学术交流的日益增强、高校中研究生培养制度的恢复和史学的革新，自20世纪80—90年代起，妇女史研究也日益繁荣，妇女史逐渐成为当代史学研究的一个前沿性的领域。本着在新的历史时期联合国内外学术界推动妇女与性别史研究的愿望，每年一本，辟有专题研究、理论方法、论坛、述评和学术前沿动态等栏目。
