所谓汉字某（民族）文，是民族书面语文言文的口语化，即借用直写法，也就是把汉字作为记音、示意或标识语法的符号，标记本民族语言。写出来的文本，不是汉文，而是民族语文。对于其他懂汉语汉字的人来说，单个汉字都认识，但文句读不懂。这种用汉字书写民族语文的方法，是对标记者（借用文字符号）与被标记者（所记录的语言）之间适应度的一种变通式的调适，是许多借用汉字的民族普遍使用的方法和经历过的阶段。日本的“万叶假名”，朝鲜的“吏读”以及中国境内的少数民族，都曾直接借用整个汉字来记音、示意、标语法，形成记录本民族语言的汉字日文、汉字朝鲜文、汉字苗文、汉字侗文等文本。
