古代行记是我国历史文化遗产的一个重要组成部分。特别是这些涉及我国西北边疆地区的古代行记，数量不多，得来不易。《古西行记选注》所选西行记，就其起讫年代来说，上自西周，下至清代，但中间所缺亦不少。本书所收西行记的体裁、风格来说，也不尽相同，其中有的是旅行者自己所写，有的是他人根据旅行者的口述、笔录和有关资料整理而成的，有的是日记形式，有的则采综合叙述。《古西行记选注》还选辑了这样一些著作，如《穆天子传》、贾耽的《四夷路程》、陈诚的《西域蕃国志》等。《古西行记选注》的任务，主要是把分散的、饶有趣味而且极有学术价值的西行记汇集起来，方便读者，并引起更多的人对我国西北地区史、地理的兴趣，激发人们热爱西北、开发西北的热情。

Even within limited knowledge， there always unavoidably consists of some compositions which like measuring the ocean with a dipper.
