The 21st century is a time of great change in particle physics. A new energy frontier re- cently opened up at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It's a time of great excite- ment with the anticipation of unexpected outcomes. At the same time, the most widely used university-level texts on high-energy physics date back to the time leading up to the W and Z boson discoveries. Since then, the Standard Model of particle physics has been thoroughly explored at the Large Electron Positron (LEP) collider at CERN, the Tevatron at Fermilab, HERA at DESY and at two B-factories, KEKB and PEP-II. A decade of neutrino physics has brought an exciting new view on these elementary and light, but massive, particles. This text is an attempt to capture the modem understanding of particle physics in a snapshot of time leading up to the start-up of the LHC. I believe that the pause in the development of texts has been due in part to the anticipated discovery of the Higgs boson and the implications that the observed Higgs field properties will have in defining the high-energy unification of the fundamental interactions. However, it is difficult for a new generation of high-energy physics to prepare for the challenge of the LHC without having the perspective needed to look beyond the limitations of the current Standard Model. -
The general idea of the book is to present basic information on the atomic nucleus and the simple theories that try to explain it. Although there is reference to experiments or measurements when I find it necessary, there is no attempt to describe the equipment and methods of experimental nuclear physics in a systematic and consistent way.In the same way, practical applications of nuclear physics are mentioned sporadically, but there is no commitment to giving a general panorama of what exists in this area.In the ordering of the subjects, I chose to begin with a study of the basic components of the nuclei, the protons and neutrons, and of other particles that compose the scenario of nuclear processes. Pions and quarks play an essential role here, and a summary of their properties is presented. In chapter 1 the properties of hadrons are summarized. Chapters 2 and 3 treat the system of two nucleons, the deuteron and the nucleon-nucleon interaction, while in the next chapter the properties of nuclei with any number of nucleons is introduced. The nuclear models that have been developed in an effort to explain these properties are described in chapter 5.Chapters 6 to 9 work with nuclear transformations, starting with a general study of radioactive properties followed by the description of alpha, beta, and gamma decay.Chapters 10 and 11 embrace the second great block of study in nuclear physics, nuclear collisions, and chapter 12 treats the role of nuclear physics for stellar evolution in several contexts of astrophysics.Chapter 13 discusses the rapidly growing field of rare nuclear isotopes, short-lived nuclei far from the valley of stability. An adequate level for a complete understanding of this book corresponds to a student studying at the end oaf first degree in physics, including, besides basic physics, a course in modern physics and a first course in quantum mechanics.Students of other exact sciences and of technology in general, can profit in good part from the subjects presented in this book. -
The book is based on the Hamiltonianinterpretation of the method, hence the title. Methods ofdifferential geometry and Hamiitonian formalism in particular arevery popular in modern mathematical physics. It is precisely thegeneral Hamiltonian formalism that presents the inverse scatteringmethod in its most elegant form. Moreover, the Hamiltonianformalism provides a link between classical and quantum mechanics. So the book is not only an introduction to the classical solitontheory but also the groundwork for the quantum theory of solitons,to be discussed in another volume. The book is addressed to specialists in mathematical physics. This has determined the choice of material and the level ofmathematical rigour. We hope that it will also be of interest tomathematicians of other specialities and to theoretical physicistsas well. Still, being a mathematical treatise it does not containapplications of soliton theory to specific physicalphenomena. -
This is a textbook on the collection ofideas categorized under the name of "string theory." This is a large domain that has as its central goal the unification ofallinteractions including gravity. There have been several surges ofprogress in different directions in the past twenty years, and this book tries to give the student ofthe field some of the salientideas. -

My intention is that this book serve as a reference work on interacting particle systems, and that it be used as the basis for an advanced graduate course on this subject. The book should be of interest not only to mathematicians, but also to workers in related areas such as mathematical physics and mathematical biology. The prerequisites for reading it are solid one-year graduate courses in analysis and probability theory, at the level of Royden (1968) and Chung (1974), respectively. Material which is usually covered in these courses will be used without comment. In addition, a familiarity with a number of other types of stochastic processes will be helpful. However, references will be given when results from specialized parts of probability theory are used. No particular knowledge of statistical mechanics or mathematical biology is assumed. While this is the first book-length treatment of the subject of interacting particle systems, a number of surveys of parts of the field have appeared in recent years. Among these are Spitzer (1974a), Holley (1974a), Sullivan (1975b), Liggett (1977b), Stroock (1978), Griffeath (1979a, 1981), and Durrett (1981). These can serve as useful comolements to the oresent work. -
