  本书按照进化论的原理,对全球藜科植物各项形态特征,如毛被物的类型、叶的解剖构造(C3&C4)、苞片和小苞片、花的性别、花盘和花盘裂片(退化雄蕊)、茎的节间、花被的变化、花药附属物、果实、种子、胚和胚根的指向、孢粉等19种性状,长期研究所获得的数据,以及对其各个性状发展过程和进化趋势的分析探讨,并以130余幅图版的扫描图像为佐证。在上述基础之上,作者依照其演化进程和亲缘关系,全面界定了本科120余属的范围及其系统位置。归并、分离和重组了混淆的分类群,例如,滨藜亚科的滨藜属(AtriplexLinn.)和粉藜属(ObioneGaertn.)的划定,藜亚科的PhyllothecaMoq.北美洲进化枝的确立、以及虫实亚科驼绒藜属(KrascheninnikoviaGueld)错位的纠正等等。也尽可能地列举了各属现有种的种名、主要文献、分布区域、及其模式产地。也有新分类群的描述。在一系列新见解基础之上,按亚科、族、属的进化顺序和亲缘的远近,排列了一个包括7个亚科,17个族,124个属的藜科植物新的分类系统。此外,本书还包括对于现存藜科植物的起源时代、起源地、分布格局和分布中心的论证,以及近年来,有关藜科植物DNA和光合作用的研究进展。
