众所周知，战后日本经济经历了高速的增长时期，这被称为日本战后经济奇迹。支撑这种高速增长的动力之一就是设备投资，设备投资的周期与经济增长的周期高度吻合。但是，随着泡沫经济的破灭，设备投资一蹶不振。尽管很多的文献指出这是资本存量过剩引起的调整，但是作者认为这种调整至多不会超过4到5年，但是日本的设备投资低迷已经持续了将近20年。《日本的设备投资与公司金融（英文版）》作者朱宏飞认为随着泡沫经济的破灭，金融机构为了修复自己的资产负债表而产生惜贷。尽管，日本央行采取了刺激的金融政策，实行低利率并增加货币供应量，但效果甚微。商业银行将大量的资金投资相对稳健的国债。
