八年抗战是指1937年7月7日---1945年8月15日中华各族人民群众与日本法西斯所进行的一场持久的战争。本书以中国人民一百多年来第一次取的反对外来侵略斗争的胜利为背景，以抗日故事为线索，表现了全国人民的民族自尊心和自信心。

七七事变后，侵华日军长驱直入。占领平、津等地后，又大举进犯山西。为打击日军的嚣张气焰，配合友军作战，八路军出兵抗敌，于1937年9月25日设伏平型关，出其不意地痛击来犯日军，歼敌1000多人，取得了全国抗战以来的第一场重大胜利，打破了“日军不可战胜”的神话，极大地鼓舞了全国军民的抗战信心。
