　　英国人福克家住伦敦，他有钱，但没有妻子儿女，也少有朋友，独来独往。他生活十分规律而准时。他是改革俱乐部的成员，每天到俱乐部打牌。他刚雇了个法国青年路路通作仆人。　银行发生了5万5千英镑的盗窃案。福克的牌友们正在议论盗贼能跑到哪里，有人说世界变得小了，3个月就能环游地球。福克说只要80天。于是他们打了赌，赌注是2万英镑。与此同时，警方得到了对盗贼的描述，与福克相似。警探被派往各地寻找嫌犯。 福克和路路通10月2日当晚出发，预计80天后的12月21日晚回到伦敦。他们的行程是伦敦—法国—苏伊士—孟买—加尔各答—香港—横滨—旧金山—纽约—伦敦。福克到苏伊士时，警探费克斯发现他和警方掌握的线索相符，就发电要求伦敦警察局寄逮捕证，以便逮捕福克。福克等不知情，继续前往加尔各答。在经过印度时，他们解救了将被烧死以殉夫的年轻女子阿欧达，并带她去香港投奔亲戚。到香港后发现亲戚早已离去。福克就决定带她回欧洲。费克斯一路跟随福克，但由于没有逮捕证，无法抓他。到日本时，费克斯从领事馆拿到逮捕证，但由于不在英国领土，不能下手。　在克服了各种困难之后，他们来到旧金山，坐上火车去纽约，途中和印第安人打了一仗。福克和路路通都表现勇敢。阿欧达逐渐对福克产生爱慕之情。到纽约后又误了上船的时间。福克雇了一条船赶路，最后把煤烧尽，连船上的家具等都烧光，终于及时回到英国。一登陆，费克斯就逮捕了福克。福克被关进监狱，无法赶回俱乐部。但不久得知真的盗贼已被捕，福克获释，但为时已晚。福克一路上把所带巨款已花光，存款也赔了进去，已破产了。但阿欧达仍爱福克，两人准备结婚。福克派路路通去请牧师，才发现他们因时差的缘故并没有迟到。福克在最后一刻来到俱乐部，赢得赌注，同时也得到了爱情。
