英国人福克家住伦敦,他有钱,但没有妻子儿女,也少有朋友,独来独往。他生活十分规律而准时。他是改革俱乐部的成员,每天到俱乐部打牌。他刚雇了个法国青年路路通作仆人。 银行发生了5万5千英镑的盗窃案。福克的牌友们正在议论盗贼能跑到哪里,有人说世界变得小了,3个月就能环游地球。福克说只要80天。于是他们打了赌,赌注是2万英镑。与此同时,警方得到了对盗贼的描述,与福克相似。警探被派往各地寻找嫌犯。 福克和路路通10月2日当晚出发,预计80天后的12月21日晚回到伦敦。他们的行程是伦敦—法国—苏伊士—孟买—加尔各答—香港—横滨—旧金山—纽约—伦敦。福克到苏伊士时,警探费克斯发现他和警方掌握的线索相符,就发电要求伦敦警察局寄逮捕证,以便逮捕福克。福克等不知情,继续前往加尔各答。在经过印度时,他们解救了将被烧死以殉夫的年轻女子阿欧达,并带她去香港投奔亲戚。到香港后发现亲戚早已离去。福克就决定带她回欧洲。费克斯一路跟随福克,但由于没有逮捕证,无法抓他。到日本时,费克斯从领事馆拿到逮捕证,但由于不在英国领土,不能下手。 在克服了各种困难之后,他们来到旧金山,坐上火车去纽约,途中和印第安人打了一仗。福克和路路通都表现勇敢。阿欧达逐渐对福克产生爱慕之情。到纽约后又误了上船的时间。福克雇了一条船赶路,最后把煤烧尽,连船上的家具等都烧光,终于及时回到英国。一登陆,费克斯就逮捕了福克。福克被关进监狱,无法赶回俱乐部。但不久得知真的盗贼已被捕,福克获释,但为时已晚。福克一路上把所带巨款已花光,存款也赔了进去,已破产了。但阿欧达仍爱福克,两人准备结婚。福克派路路通去请牧师,才发现他们因时差的缘故并没有迟到。福克在最后一刻来到俱乐部,赢得赌注,同时也得到了爱情。
