林语堂用英语创作的一系列作品曾经轰动欧美文坛,并且影响深远,其中有的被美国大学选取为教材,有的被政府高层倚为了解中国之必读,一直被视作阐述东方文化的权威著述。其次还因为林氏高超的艺术造诣和非凡的文化修养。作为国际笔会的副会长,并获诺贝尔文学奖的提名,他的创作无疑为他赢得了国际文坛的巨匠地位,同时也为中国人赢得骄傲。再者,应是惊叹于林氏那“极其美妙,令以英文国母语的人既羡慕敬佩又深感惭愧”的精纯娴熟的英语;当然我们也终于让林语堂先生不再遗憾“......三十年著作全用英文,应是文字精华所在,惜未能与中国读者相见......”《生活的艺术》是林语堂旅美专事创作后的第一部书,也是继《吾国与吾民》之后再获成功的又一英文作品。该于1937年在美国出版,次年便居美国畅销书排行榜榜首达52财,且接连再版四十余次,并为十余种文字所翻译。林语堂在该书中将旷怀达观,陶情遣兴的中国人的生活方式,和浪漫高雅的东方情调予以充分的传达,向西方人娓娓道出了一个可供仿效的“生活最高典型”的模式,以致有书评家(PeterPrecott)称:“读完这书后,我真想跑到唐人街,一遇见中国人,便向他行个鞠躬礼。”应该承认,本书无论从内容上还是语言上来说,都是我国英语爱好者难得的一本读物。但尢需指出的是,林氏的某些观点是与马克思主义相违背的,这绝不代表我们作为出版者的观点,希读者以科学的世界观和方法论为指导,慎审明辨。同样的原因,我们对个别地方的删节也请读者理解。林语堂(1895.10.3~1976.3.26),福建龙溪人。原名和乐,后玉堂,又改语堂。1912年入上海圣约翰大学,毕业后在清华大学任教。1919年秋赴美哈佛大学文学系。1921年获文学硕士学位,同年转赴德国入莱比锡大学,专攻语言学。1923年获博士学位后回国,任北京大学教授、北京女子师范大学教务长和英文系主任。1924年后为《语丝》主要撰稿人之一。1926年到厦门大学任文学院长。1927年任外交部秘书。1932年主《论语》半月刊。1934年创办《人世间》,1935年创办《宇宙风》,提倡“以自我为中心,以闲适为格调”的小品文。1935年后,在美国用英文写《吾国与吾民》、《生活的艺术》、《京华烟云》、《风声鹤唳》等文化著作和长篇小说。1944年曾一度回国到重庆讲学。1945年赴新加坡筹建南洋大学,任校长。1952年在美国与人创办《天风》杂志。1966年定居台湾。1975受聘为香港中文大学研究教授。1975年被推举为国际笔会副会长。...[更多内容]
