《英语考试词汇释通》的编著者在这方面做了非常切实的工作，进行了卓有成效的研究探讨。首先，他们从两方面对有关材料进行了收集：一方面搜集整理了现行的各类高校教材中的资料，另一方面对照了上百套的各类英语试题，如全国大学英语四、六级考试，研究生英语考试，EPT、TOEFL、GRE考试以及全国普通高校招生考试的试题。材料内容丰富，覆盖面广。在分析方法上，该书编者也有独到之处。对于书中所编的词汇，尤其是语义纠缠不清的部分，编者作了精确的分析和实质性的辨析，如对accept，re-ceive两词，编者认为前一词侧重主观意愿，后一词侧重客观行为；对于careful，cautious，编者认为前者侧重细致、仔细，后者侧重小心、提防；对于bring，take，fetch，编者指出第一词指由彼及此的动作，第二词指由此至彼的动作。
