国璋从事英语教学四十年，这是第三次编写教材。第一次编写在1962年。那时有一个庞大的教材编写计划，着重文科。也包括外语。为了“多样化”，选材的方面也比较宽。不到几年，浩劫降临，于是有上台受审之事，自叹在劫难逃而已。第二次编写在1979年。距初编17年。那时，阴霾已经冲破，现代化进程已初具蓝图。教本理应作相当多的变更以为适应。书店急需，仅是收进21篇新课文，换掉了相同的旧篇。自学考试兴起，发行到第十年以后，年销售竟达30万册，反映了中国青年的自学热情。但是，销售尽管很畅，时代对我们的要求也愈来愈高。中国已经从封闭到开放，从陈规到改革，从拘泥一格到博闻广交，新编的教材自然也应具有面向世界的特点。我们1990年第三次编写，几易其稿，决定做下面的安排：第一册：历大洋的开发和名城景色；第二册：太平洋上经济争雄；第三册：小说人生；广角镜下的近代世界；第四册：古今纵览；人物和文物。可以看出，我们以近代为重，以世界为重，以文化信息为重；不取句型和交际。举一个例。我们第二册16篇课文之中，有5篇以日本为主题或副题。有的同志问，我们学英语，要有如许日本题材是为了什么？我们说，日本的经济扩张，是世界有心人注意的事，是与中国密切相关的事，我们不能不问。我们今天学英语，得有接受一切英语信息的胸怀，也即是面向世界的气度。园囿于一国和几国，是开放中的封闭。总之，我们的方针是把文化知识和传输知识的语言结合起来学习，把实情实景呈现在学习者面前；让学生们在知识的河海中游泳，在活泼的语境中进入角色；学得有意思，有兴致，既快乐也快速。整天化在分析套用与交际之中，真是太苦了。新编一二册成书之时，北京外国语学院朱炳和同志助我极多。他既编选教材，又精心注释，他审校认真，前后达六校之多。我深表感谢。
