Abstract
This dissertation studies the literary language of the novel of the late Qing Dynasty E rnü Yingxiong Zhuan．It centers on the text of the novel and starts from the bottom of the language，and adopts multi‐disci‐pline approaches of linguistics，literaturology，aesthetics and semeiolo‐gy，etc．which are merged together．It explores the art of literary lan‐guage in E rnü Yingxiong Zhuan from different angles and levels and by making a microscopic investigation and citing objective and reliable ex‐amples．
It is over 150 years since E rnü Yingxiong Zhuan was first pub‐lished．During this period，critics mainly commented on it from the an‐gles of history，literature，ethnology and culture，half derogatorily and half commendatorily．However，the art of literary language in E rnü Yingxiong Zhuan was unanimously commended．Up to now，the scholars’ comments on it are succinct summaries and lack specific textual research，and some of them are even biased．Although some of the re‐searchers made comprehensive and systematic textual researches on the function words of E rnü Yingxiong Zhuan and on the adverbs of E rnü4《儿女英雄传》的文学语言研究Yingxiong Zhuan，the results of the systematic survey of it from the an‐gle of literary language have been short so far．Therefore，the aesthetic appreciation of the literary language in E rnü Yingxiong Zhuan is a crea‐tive research topic，and this is also the starting point and significance of this dissertation．
This dissertation is composed of eight chapters．The first part ex‐pounds the forms and contents，the norms and variations，and the aes‐thetic characteristics，etc．of the literary language for the purpose of clarifying some confused ideas and finding an appropriate logical starting point and bearings of thinking for the study of the literary language．And then，it emphatically traces the track of the evolution of literary language chronologically since 1980s；straightens out and investigates the existing achievements in the research；discusses the aesthetic angle of the literary language based on the text，and summarizes the status quo of the re‐search on the literary language in E rnü Yingxiong Zhuan to lay a solid foundation for a deeper research．The center of this dissertation makes multidimensional researches on the different levels and different langua‐ges of the text of the novel，and makes a systematic exposition of the dif‐ferent artistic functions and aesthetic value of different languages in spe‐cific contexts．
