POEMS BY LI PO
GRIEF
My lady has rolled up the curtains of pearl,
And sits with a frown on her eyebrows apart.
Wet traces of tears can be seen as they curl.
But who knows for whom is the grief in her heart?
TO WUCHANG
This moon o'ershines the westward Huang Ho Lou.
A Yangtze stream my distant feelings flow.
Some thirty times the vernal breezes blew
Since longing thoughts to Wuchang city flew.
To send you thither—ah! the parting's pain!
Our farewell cups unemptied yet remain.
You lake joins on to realms of ancient bliss.
Your floating ship that hill hands on to this.
Those Hupeh men old friends do not forget,
Like Hsieh–chao's clarity, unblemished yet.
And so the gipsy verses I outpoured,
I send to echo round the festive board.
RETIREMENT
(An Ode to Meng Hoa-jan)
Here rich and noble quit this world's despite,
As green hills visit at the temple door.
The Golden Rule marks out the Path of Light;
Dull Plegethon the Jade Raft floats us o'er.
This range's trees knit up a flying bridge.
Each cavern's flowers the valley's streamlets hide.
The sea-born Moon mounts up the Pagod's ridge.
Yon Tower outsoars the river's mist-belt wide.
From triple heavens fragrant airs descend.
The bell re-echoes through a myriad dales.
With Autumn dew the waterlilies bend.
The moon just full the tangling pine half veils.
Lo! Gathering birds that hear the Word rejoice;
And snakes still-curled, as guarding thoughts sublime.
Ah! That I were the leaping torrent's voice
With Po-ya's chords in harmony to chime!
ADIEU
Athwart the northern gate the green hills swell.
White water round the eastern city flows.
When once we here have bade a long farewell,
Your lone sail struggling up the current goes.
Those floating clouds are like the wanderer's heart.
Yon sinking sun recalls departed days.
Your hand waves us adieu; and lo! You start,
And dismally your horse retiring neighs.
THAT PARTING AT CH'ANG KAN
When first o'er maiden brows my hair I tied,
In sport I plucked the blooms before the door.
You riding came on hobby-horse astride,
And wreathed my bed with greengage branches o'er.
At Ch'ang-kan village long together dwelt
We children twain, and knew no petty strife.
At fourteen years lo! I became thy wife.
Yet ah! The modest shyness that I felt!
My shame-faced head I in a corner hung;
Nor to long calling answered word of mine.
At fifteen years my heart's gate open sprung,
And I were glad to mix my dust with thine.
My troth to thee till death I keep for aye:
My eyes still gaze adoring on my lord.
When I was but sixteen you went away.
In Chü-t'ang Gorge how Yen-yü's billows roared!
For five long months with you I cannot meet
The gibbon's wail reёchoes to the sky!
Before the door, where stood your parting feet,
The prints with verdant moss are covered high.
Deep is that moss! It will not brush away.
In early autumn's gale the leaflets fall.
September now! —the butterflies so gay
Disport on grasses by our garden wall.
The sight my heart disturbs with longing woe.
I sit and wail, my red cheeks growing old.
Early and late I to the gorges go,
Waiting for news that of thy coming told.
How short will seem the way, if we but meet!
Across the sand the wind flies straight to greet.
WE THREE
One pot of wine amid the Flowers
Alone I pour, and none with me.
The cup I lift; the Moon invite;
Who with my shadow makes us three.
The Moon then drinks without a pause.
The shadow does what I begin.
The shadow, Moon and I in fere
Rejoice until the Spring come in.
I sing: and wavers time the Moon.
I dance: the shadow antics too.
Our joys we share while sober still.
When drunk, we part and bid adieu.
Of loveless outing this the pact,
Which we all swear to keep for aye.
The next time that we meet shall be
Beside yon distant Milky Way.
THE MOON OVER THE PASS
O'er Altai's range the Moon arises bright,
Floating in vasty seas of cloud and night.
O'er boundless plains the shrill wind hither blows,
And whistles as o'er Yü-men Pass it goes.
Beneath the Milky Way there stretches white
The road that leads to yonder tower-crowned height.
The eager Tatars search each hollow bay
Of Tsaidam's sea. Nor see I come away
One mortal soul of all who went to fight.
They dwell in arms; and backward gazing pine
For frontier towns; and longing to return
O'er sad worn faces draws a bitter line.
To-night, as from this lofty tower I yearn,
No voice reёchoes back these sighs of mine.
A SONG OF LU SHAN
A bad and mad fellow am I,
Whose wild songs philosophy mock.
A staff of green jade in my hand
At dawn said farewell to the land
Where the Crane left its print on the rock.
Through Five Sacred Mountains to wander,
In search of some beautiful hill,
No distance could ever yet daunt me.
The joy of my lifetime is still
Across famous mountains to ramble,
In search of some beautiful hill.
Lo! Lu Shan outlined by the Lesser Bear's side,
And Ping-feng, in silken clouds veiléd, nine-fold!
Their shadow makes sombre the Lake's lucent tide,
Twin peaks propping up the wide Gateway of Gold.
The Milky Way hangs o'er the Triple Stane Beam.
The cascade and Hsiang-lu mutually stare.
The crags joined in one azure bracelet would seem.
The dawn shimmers glinting in green and red air.
The birds flying highest attain not this sky,
Where Heaven and the Earth are so equally nigh.
Yon Yangtze streams downward, and never returns,
O'er yellow clouds league-long a changing hue burns.
In every direction the white billows flow
As the hills sink and swell in their cover of snow.
Of Lu Shan I love to sing best.
It rouseth the soul in my breast.
On Stone Mirror gazing my heart becomes pure.
In green mosses hidden Hsieh's footsteps endure.
Elixirs immortal I tasted when young
That loosened all ties to this sad world below,
As first to the tripled refrain that I sun
I entered with music the Way that I go.
On coloured clouds yonder the genii fly,
Who holding a lotus are bowing in prayer
To cities of Wonder that float in the sky
And compact I've made them to meet with them there,
To cross o'er the Uttermost Limits on high,
To Kingdoms of Faerie, with Lu Ao, repair.
A DREAM OF T'IEN-MU MOUNTAIN
Speak of the Blessed Islands men from the Ocean's brim.
Truth is hid in their endless billows and mist-wreaths dim.
Tell of the T'ien-mu Mountain men in the land of Yore,
Seen there, when rainbows scatter, and clouds conceal no more!
Reaching up to the zenith, the skyline it seems to fill,
Huge like the Sacred Mountains piled over Ch'ih-ch'eng Hill.
T'ien-t'ai Mountain is fifty myriads of feet in height,
Crushing, about to fall, soaring in awful might!
Seeing, I longed to dream of Wu and the land of Yore:
Flew one night on a moonbeam over the Mirror's shore.
Moon, that reflected my shadow dark on the lake below,
Carried me thence to Yen-ch'i, land that the spirits know.
Place where the ancient Hsieh dwelt is yet to be seen.
Gibbons howl by the water dimpling so purely green.
Bound on my feet the clogs were uséd by Hsieh of old,
Mounting the dun clouds ladder, halfway up I behold
Sea and the Sun; and I hear mystic carols in Space.
海客谈瀛洲,烟涛微茫信难求;
Crags and hollows commingled, hard is the road to trace.
Flower-drugged, I lean on a rock. Lo! Night her shadow flings!
Bears' roars and dragons' bellowings boom over rocks and springs!
Startled, how forests quake on ridge over ridge of crags!
Black are the sombre clouds, waiting the rain to pour.
Placid the water still; above it the mist wraith lags.
Flash! and the hollow hills blasting the lightning tore.
Crash! and the stone gates burst of the vaulted sky in twain.
Boundless those azure spaces; end is there none in view.
Sunlight and moonbeams commingle golden and silver hue.
Clad in rainbows, and mounted on coursers of rapid wind,
Lords of the clouds come trooping; and trooping more behind.
Tiger roar of the drums, psalteries' oriole note.
Orderly mixing disorder, crowding the genii float
Suddenly feared my soul; twanging my spirit leapt.
Startled and trembling sprang I. Sorely I sighed and wept,
Feeling that I was awake; that it was but a dream now past.
Gone all those roseate hues the mist-wreaths had mingled last!
Thus are the joys of life! For all things pass away.
Streamlike flowing a-down , old Time will never stay.
Now, as I bid you farewell, when will you turn again,
Over the verdant mountains loosing the White Deer's rein?
Wishing to go, we ride it seeking the famous hills…
Eyes must I bow, and body bending, submit to serve
Rich and powerful below, where never I may deserve
Happy a thought to think, or carelessly laugh at ills?
TO MENG HAO-JAN
Worthy Meng I love in sooth,
Famed beyond where we can trace it.
Such a comely face in truth
Needs no lofty cap to grace it.
Firs and clouds his whitened head
Pillow high on airy bed.
To the prophets might attain
Those the Moon had drunken made.
Those the flowers drugged, in vain
Sought their homage to have paid.
Such mountain crest—how best to greet?
I pledge this bunch of fragrance sweet.
HARD ARE THE WAYS OF SZECHUEN
Lo! how huge! how mighty!
Sheer and towering high!
Hard are the ways of Szechuen,
Harder than scaling the sky!
Monstrous surely the country
Ts'an-ts'ung and Yü-fu won…
Ages a thousand are past and done,
Yet through the Gorge of Ch'in, as then,
It access gives to worlds of men.
Westward is T'ai-po Hill,
Free to the birds alone,
Joining with Omei Mountain,
By winding paths unknown.
The earth caved in; and the hill
Snapped; and the Mighty died.
Thereafter the steps of the sky
Were joined by bridges of stone.
